Glass Door Knobs - A Glass From The PastBy Jesse Akre
When one thinks of antique or period door knobs one obviously gravitates towards glass door knobs. They used to be the standard in old homes. Glass door knobs were magnificently crafted pieces that sparkled like diamonds when the sunlight hit them. Glass door knobs were often found in the homes of the affluent, or in palaces where only the best would do for furnishings and hardware.
For some reason, there was eventually a switch from glass door knobs to metal door knobs. It may have been because of the fragility of glass door knobs. As one would expect, glass door knobs take special care. They are, after all, made out of glass. Glass door knobs are not the kind of hardware that should be banged around and treated roughly. They won’t last in harsh conditions, nor should they be put outside. Glass door knobs put outside can crack or break in excessive hot or cold weather. The other possible reason for the change to door knobs may have to do with the price. Glass door knobs are considered pieces of art, made one at a time, while meal door knobs can be quickly poured in molds to suit the demand for them.
But the beauty of glass door knobs is very hard to dismiss. Not only do they have a stunning look, but they also capture a period of American history that is one of boundless creativity and hope, a time when people appreciated the artistry that went into making such items.
Glass door knobs have a beauty and elegance through the artistry of the glass. Each is unique to the manufacturer and the artist that created it. Essentially every antique glass door knob is a piece of art. This is likely why these pieces are so sought after. You may be surprised if you were at an auction and some antique door knobs came up for bid. The bidding may well be fierce to get a hold of these beautiful blasts of the past. For those who collect antique door knobs, these auction houses and estate auctions are their life, as they search for more of these amazing pieces of history.
Luckily you don’t have to be checking auction houses and estate auctions to find nice glass door knobs for your home. Today there are many glass door knobs being manufactured in all styles. Some are more modern styles with colored glass or designs inside the glass, but if you are looking for the old antique style, those are available as well. There are actually experts who do nothing but work to reproduce those old antique pieces for people to use in their modern homes.
Against a traditional doorway, glass door knobs have a lightness and brilliance as they are transparent and pick up the colors of the space behind them in their many facets. Glass door knobs will take on the character of the room they have been installed in, enhancing your homes natural beauty and the beauty of the door it is attached to.
